Like every thing that we do in life there is always some risk, however, we continue doing what we have to and what we want to by taking precautions and being cognizant. There are many who perceives cycling as a risky activity, I can understand their apprehensions especially if you are riding in a city, however, as mentioned earlier if you have taken precautions and are watchful 'Cycling' is an activity which has the potential to make you feel euphoric and of course all the health benefits that we know of.
Here are a few things that you can do to enjoy a safe ride:
1) Wear your Brain bucket (Helmet) - its your head and if you really care for it oblige it by wearing a helmet even if you are riding for a short distance there are factors beyond anyone's control and 99.99% chances are that nothing is gonna happen to you., however, we all know it's better to be safe, than being sorry!! |
Be sure you buy a helmet that fits you well and are meeting SAFETY standards, please resist from trying to get some thing for cheap.
Helmets can be categorized as a Safety item and an accessory which makes riders look good and keep them cool from direct sun light.
Check for safety certification on the inside of helmet or the base of the helmet
2) Bright and Light 1) Be Visible - If someone spots you from a distance it's highly unlikely s/he will drive to knock you down. We recommend that riders should wear cloths that are bright in colour. |
2) Beat the Heat - Bright and Lighter shades will reflect more heat than absorb it as compared to darker shades.
3) Tail Light - Install a tail light and preferably choose the mode that does not flash (this will enable driver to make better judgments; flashing lights might deceive the driver to make proper distance judgment) and please remember to switch it on especially if you are gonna be riding in low lights.
3) Tail Light - Install a tail light and preferably choose the mode that does not flash (this will enable driver to make better judgments; flashing lights might deceive the driver to make proper distance judgment) and please remember to switch it on especially if you are gonna be riding in low lights. 4) Head Light - If you are gonna be riding in low lights installing a good front light can be of great help, to have clear view of the Road ahead and avoid those pot holes we can not live without ;) |
3) Protect your eyes by investing in good quality shades and when selecting remember to buy which is most suited as per the light conditions you are going to ride e.g. Dark Shades – Day Light, Amber – Low Lights and Clear - night rides. |
4) FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES – - Stop at the Signal when it's Red |
- Get into the habit of using hand signals, remember to use them often and time it right so the person seeing your signal can take appropriate action/s.
- Maintain lane discipline at all given point of time as maximum accidents happen because someone breached their lane discipline and the other did not have enough time to respond.
PLEASE DO NOT FLICK YOUR BIKE you might put others coming from behind you in great difficulty.
5) Keep the volume low - we all like to listen to some music and many likes to keep the volume to the maximum with their headset on...be sure you can hear the HORN!!! |
6) Be watchful and maintain your sight on the road at all given point in time, Anticipate other riders/drivers move, if you can not anticipate or predict -simply slow down a bit and this might buy you some invaluable seconds to respond. |
You are going for a ride and not a war so remember to ENJOY YOUR RIDE!!!
